Question: I have a model 86 Winchester that refuses to load a shell from the carrier into the barrel. When pressure is released from the lever, the carrier with the round drops down below where the shell can enter the barrel. Can anyone tell me what is wrong here?

One of my '86s did that occassionally when it was brand new. Eventually the problem just went away. I assumed either it was a break-in issue, or I wasn't being forceful enough with the lever or something.

I used the same ammunition, with the same OAL, so that wasn't it.

swifty,

I agree with CowboyGunNut in that you may not be forcefull enough with the lever's downstroke. I have one of the newly built 86's that was made in Japan by Miroku that has the same quirk. After about 100 rounds it is somewhat better.

I have some originals, and it is usually bad carrier spring, my .02 cents
