Has anyone done this conversion?  Is it practical?  Just some Sunday afternoon ruminating.  Not concerned about the problems of fireforming cases, etc.  Already do it for the Contender.

Thanks

Bill

Bill,

Doesn't seem too practical from the standpoint of already having the 35 Rem available in numerous leverguns.

In say a conversion of a 357 Mag levergun, you'll run into action dimensional problems from the start negating a practical conversion.

You could rebarrel a 30-30 and go for a 35/30-30 based on the 30-30WCF case and after spending all the money wind up with essentially a rimmed 35 Rem anyway.

The main reason for the development of the 357 Herrett was to have a supposedly more efficient, rimmed cartridge for use in the Contender length barrels.

The 35 Rem is factory loaded to lower pressures in defference to the autoloading gun it was made to operate in and function the action properly. In a levergun or Contender pistol, this Cartridge can be easily loaded closer to 40,000 CUP in the stronger actions.

When this is done, there is virtually no difference between the Herrett and 35 Rem worth talking about except of course a rimmed case which CAN be more user friendly in the Contender.

FWIW, Ray

Bill,

You could rebarrel a 30-30 Model 94 and go for a 35/30-30 Wildcat based on the 30-30WCF case (longer case, more powder capacity than a 357 Herrett) and after spending all the money wind up with essentially a rimmed 35 Rem anyway.

The 35/30-30 is essentially a necked-up 30-30 case with the same length as the 30-30WCF. This should minimize any feeding/cartridge length problems.

OR Look for a used 94 XTR in 356 Winchester. Basically a rimmed 358 WInchester.

It's all a matter of cost/functionality verses benefit over a factory issued cartridge that will do the same job and have the same performance in the long run.

Hey Ray,

Thanks for confirming what I already knew.  I shoot the 357 Herritt in my contender and it is quite satisfactory.  Like I said in my original post just some Sunday afternoon ruminating.  Too bad the 35 Rem doesn't lend itself to use in the Model 94.

Anyway I have a 30-30 and 444 in the Model 94.  Was just thinking about a middle cartridge. LOL.  I have a closet full of bolt guns but I really enjoy the lever rifles.  I also have a Browning 1885 in 45-70.

Guess I could save up and get a '95 in 405, Hummmm Christmas is coming and I know my wife won't think of that so it might be legal to buy myself a gift.  Hummmm buying her one would not work--tried that too many times.

Better hush before I get myself in trouble.

Bill,

A neat hobby gun would be a NEF Handi-Rifle in 357 Mag. Have it punched out to Any other 35 caliber cartridge you would want and be ahead of the game with a neat little rifle to play with.

I could swear that at one time the 94 was chambered in 35 Rem but I might be mistaken.

That rebarrel to 35/30-30 might be the most cost effective way to go with a lever gun and retain the rimmed case and very little to no action/feeding problems.

I've thought myself of a Marlin case based wildcat in 35 Bellm in a rebarrelled 444 actioned Marlin.

Another neat chambering is a 35 Remington rimmed using 30/40 Krag brass formed and necked up in the 35 Rem dies and cases trimmed to 35 Rem length. Good way to get a rimmed case for the Contender or other gun where it's desired. Load using 35 Rem data as a guide.

Have Fun, Ray
