Here is a knife I designed with my friend and knife maker, Lowell Ward of Kotzebue, AK. It is a modular design that disassembles with one Allen screw in the pommel. The blade is 01 high-carbon steel we sent out for cryogenic treatment, edge hardening, and application of gun coat. The handle and sheath are made of G10 glass filled polycarbonate.
I have no idea what it is worth; we negotiated in trade, but I would say at least $400.

That's a great-looking knife and certainly one-of-a-kind, but there's no way I'd every shell out $400 for one. There are so many excellent knives and knife systems on the market these days, I can't imagine spending 5 times as much as a good Buck knife costs, to have a custom knife made.

Then again, this is America, where we work hard, dream big and celebrate our differences, so congratulations on making one heckuva pig-sticker! :)

Looks and sounds great butr I have one question. Why not go with something a bit less prone to rust than the 01 steel? From what I hear, Alaska has a tendency to get wet. I know my M2 blades take lots of maintaining in wet climates.

I wanted high-carbon steel because it is easier to sharpen and holds the edge better than any stainless I have ever used, especially the Buck 119, upon which this design is based. The Buck 119 was my favorite, but it took forever to sharpen, and would lose it's edge far sooner than an Old Hickory butcher knife.

I had the Gun Kote applied to keep it from rusting, and it works great. The reason we made it modular is so that any parts can be replaced, and or cleaned when needed.

And finally, about the cost of a custom knife, it is as with anything: one often gets what one pays for. There are many fine knives in the world, but there is only one just like mine, at least until Lowell makes another one.

This knife is one of my prized possessions, and it only cost me storing his stuff for the summer while he moved to a new home...
