I picked up my first 1911 today. It's a Para Ordnance Hi-Cap model, made for my brigade as a commemorative piece for our deployment to Afghanistan. Para sold us a pistol with an MSRP of over $1600 with all the options and extra magazines. But they only charged us $775.00. I couldn't pass it up. This will get some action at the range, and I'll carry it around for a few years, but it will also be a sentimental heirloom that I'll pass on to my son. I'm taking it to my local shooting spot on Sunday to put it through it's paces.

Unfortunately, no. The US military has gotten pretty "politically correct" when it comes to weapons in the past 20 or so years. We comply with UN and Geneva Convention regs. The simplest way to comply with those regs is to eliminate personal weapons and mandate the carry of only issued weapons and ammo. I've heard rumors that suggest we might still be permitted to carry a personal side-arm down-range, but it must be one chambered in 9MM, and you can only use issued ammo. Oh, and it requires all kinds of paperwork signed by all kinds of people, none of which have the time to bother with an individual weapon request.

Very cool for Para to offer that for you! I have one remaining Para, its a 7-45LDA Limited that I like a lot. I think you'll be very happy with that pistol, and no doubt its worth a lot more than the price you paid! Semper Fi!

Thanks Mattsbox99 - it is worth more to me. I know the 1911 is a design which has stood the test of time, and it holds some value for me, since it was an issued weapon in it's original form as created by John Moses Browning in another era for the US military. I wish it were still the standard side-arm today. I will enjoy shooting and carrying it, and will enjoy even more passing it on to my son someday.

I've got Mattsbox's other Para....the 16-40
It's an LDA also, and shoots like a dream!

The biggest issue with the double stacks is finding aftermarket grips.....LOL

good luck with yours, and thank you for your service to our Country.

Please stay safe.

excellent sidearm. There is not a high enough number to put on the sentimental value that it will have for you and especially for your son at the right time in the future. As a son of a father who served in 2 wars, I highly value every physical reminder of his sacrifice and faithfulness.
Armed Forces Day coming up May 15th to remind us all of you and your comrades, past, present and future, service. I give you thanks for your service.

Thanks everyone! It's currently loaded with Double-Tap 200 gr. hollow points in the night-stand pistol safe. I can't wait to get it out this weekend and see how it shoots!

Range Junkie - thanks! I'm curious - are you like me, in that you can't leave the range without pilfering the brass everyone leaves behind? My kids LOVE collecting the brass that other shooters leave at my local shooting area. It's like $$ for me. I use a universal de-capping die and throw them in the tumbler. Any brass that I can't use becomes store credit at my local shooter's supply shop.
