Well since I've been speculating this for a long time now, I have to just ask. I figure there may be some folks out there with the knowledge I am seeking.

Is there anyplace in New Hampshire a shooter can get 1000 yards?

I'm not really looking for a bonafide range per se, just a place where I can practice a little. I'm thinking an old railroad bed or powerlines up in Northern NH, but open to suggestion.

I would also be interested in forming a group of people who would gather to shoot distance occasionally.

Any advice or leads would be much obliged.

The best official range I know of is 300yds at Major Waldrons in Barrington, NH. Theres a NG armory/training facility in Strafford, but just from flying over it, I don't believe that they have a very large one. There might be one at the Pease Air Guard base in Porstmouth.

The last long-range stuff that I did was last summer at a lake in the middle of paper country in Northern ME. Around here it seems like all the powerlines and abandoned RR beds are turning into developments.

I used to work for a company that had a 4000' private airfield, but at the time never had anything that would reach out and touch the other end effectively....

The gun club in Nashua (I heard) has 500yds. That's the longest I have heard of in NH. Keene sportsman club has 300. An aquaintance of mine said he shot his .50 out on some powerlines somewhere, and he is from Keene area. He didn't think it was 1000, but definitely over 500.

I'm not an expert shot, but I was decorated for marksmanship in the service. 100 yds is fine for sighting-in a new scope or something, but hellishly-boring for anything else. The only fun I get at 100 is shooting empty shotgun shells and sparkplugs.

Anyone lurking out there, please chime in if you know of a good spot. :)

Maine.

The whole state of NH is a hill. There is a NH 4x4 club that seeks out class 7 (?) roads to conquer, but, your best bet is a gun club in Maine, imho.

I actually know of some places in Maine that would be suitable, but several hours drive. I grew up in Maine, left when I was 18 (1976) to join the military and never went back ('cept to visit friends and relatives).
