Hi, Guys:
Forster makes a #4 collet for the .45-70. This collet also needs the collet housing opening enlarged to 0.610". Forster will enlarge your old housing for free.

If you're not in the lower 48 it might be cheaper to order the #4 collet and the .45-70 housing direct (p/n CT1010-013-4)

I have the Lyman, which is well constructed, but has "semi-target knobs" for adjustment. They stick up above the surface of the sight and can catch on stuff. I have ordered a Williams catalog to evaluate the Foolproof sight for a "new" used Brownchester model 71 that is supposed to be here Tuesday. I would prefer a smoother sight to the Lyman.

I have a Williams FP on my EL. It took me quite a while to zero it because you have to use a screwdriver to adjust it. Once zeroed it's great. I like the Marble's tang sights on my original '86s,also. They are excellent for target shooting. For hunting I prefer a Marble's flip up or the receiver sight. Wishing you the best,

I have a Marbles tang on my M-94 BB XTR .375, very nice. It won't work of course on my new 1886 with a Tang Safety. That leaves only the receiver sights. I have never seen a Lyman but have a Williams Foolproof. I think it looks "bulky" for such a respectable Rifle like the 1886. But, if the Lyman is "catchy", maybe thats worse then "bulky" <!--emo&

I see no advantage to lightening the rifle, or shortening it. Mine handles very well and points well with the receiver sight. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
I will be looking at the Williams Foolproof in a week or so to see if it is bulkier than the Lyman. I somehow doubt it, so that should not be an issue.
Incidently, I have seen a couple of pictures of a sight that is mounted on the bolt of a Winchester model 71 that is very compact. They are found on GunsAmerica under Winchester Modern Levers. The bolts of the 71 and '86 are identical, I believe, so maybe there is a possibility of identifying that sight and locating one from either Lyman or Williams.

Well fellas I'm glad I found this thread.
I'm shooting one of the new 1886 take downs. I installed a tang site on mine to keep it traditional. Like your rifles, mine is beautiful, accurate, very well made.
Mine has the cresant butt plate, which if I snuggle up to it does not bounce me to much. I've considered getting a set of nice wood from 'Great American Gunstocks' with the shotgun butt and seeing if that improves anything. Anybody have any experience on that?
I found a good load shooting the Saeco 350 gr GC with RL-7 powder and proceeded to load a few hundred for practice. My next project for this rifle is to do the accuracy testing with a 445 gr GC Lyman.
Reading your postings I'm tempted to acquire a second 1886 in the EL sounds like it might be fun.

I have 1886s with both crescent and shotgun butts and the shotguns are a lot easier on the shoulder. They also "come up" faster in hunting situations. The bolt peep was a Winchester option, however, I don't know if it is being reproduced at this time. I have run across them at gunshows, but they tend to be a bit "pricey" these days. Buckingham's Antique Winchester Parts is probably a good source. Keep 'em smokin', mike

I think the "new" bolt peep you guys are talking about is the Ashley Outdoors sight. There main drawback seems to be they are mounted high and they have only one size opening, BIG! I have one on my Guide Gun and it is great for that.
This string does go on doesn't it? Everybody including me is pretty happy with their ELR's it seems. As for tang sights Brownells does catalogue one for use with tang safety 86's. I haven't seen one so don't know if mounts over the safety which is blocked in the off position or what. Anybody got/seen one? regards all.
Yeah BC, this does seem to have a life of it's own. Marble makes a tang sight for the tang safetied '86EL. I believe that there is a cutout to make the safety available, but I'm not sure. If you were curious, mine also has a hollowed buttstock. I am going to add a decelerato pad to it. I am also going to try and get one of the Marbles and see how I like it and compare it to the Williams. It weighed in at 7lb11oz. Maybe that hole is a good place for survival gear?
FA18CUB- Provided you carry a tool that lets you access it why not. Not much point if you had to break the stock to get at it though. I once purchased a Model 12 and decided to refinish the wood a year later. Found two 100.00 US bills in the butt screw hole. Talk about hiding your money from your wife! Or maybe it was in reserve to pay his fines. besto
