Pol Putting Heat On
Gunmakers' Practices

Calling for a crackdown on illegal gun trafficking, City Councilman David Yassky unveiled legislation that would establish a "code of conduct" for gun manufacturers.

Under such a code, gunmakers would agree not to do business with any store that sells weapons at gun shows; has sold at least 20 weapons in the past 12 months that were traced to crimes, and refuses to follow a "one-gun-a-month" sales limit to individuals.

In addition, the legislation says gun manufacturers should sell only to established stores, not "kitchen table dealers" operating out of homes.

Last week, the Daily News reported the number of shooting victims in the city jumped 26.5% from the same period last year.

According to Yassky (D-Brooklyn), fewer than 100 people were arrested for gun trafficking in 2000 — the latest year for which such statistics are available — even though illegal firearms were used in more than 7,000 violent crimes.

"We need to apply the same techniques that we apply to illegal drug traffickers to illegal gun traffickers," he said.
