I've used loose powder most of the time although did do some experimentation with the pellets. With several of my muzzle loaders I had best accuracy with less than 100 grain loading therefore more reason for loose powder usage. Both round ball and saboted loads have been used. Even found I could shoot round balls in my in-line if the Hornady round ball sabots were used. That combination really supprised me since the twist rate is wrong for patched round balls.
You need to work up your loads for whatever bullet used too obtain optimum performance. I wouldn't worry so much about velocity as accuracy. You hit a deer with .50 caliber bullet and it really spoils there day.
