Catch an 18 foot 200 pound snake? Isn't that what #4 buckshot is for!

----------------------------------------------------------------------
'Schall repeats an ominous warning he's heard about tracking and detaining pythons. "They'll wrap themselves around you so quick you won't even have enough time to pull out your pocket knife."

Schall and the other python hunters are at a distinct disadvantage in that they cannot kill the snakes outright, but must trap them -- by hand or whatever nonlethal means they can devise -- and deliver them to wildlife officials, who will euthanize them by injection.'

so the state of florida considers pythons game animals....reminds me of california and there pigs, seems to me florida dont wanna get rid of the snames, but make money off them. Since there non native, they shouldnt be a game species (invasive) there should be no laws concerning them, should be able to kill them whenever you see em, like a coyote or a pig (excluding cali)

I heard Florida had a better plan for dealing with the snakes, open season no bag limit. these are an invasive non-indiginous species that are devouring many of the game speciese. They should be right up there with feral hogs as far as i'm concerned. not sure why they changed the plan to this sissyfied attitude of non-hunting hunting. does the hunter that bags the critter even get to keep the skin or does it too become property of fish and game to be "studied?"

That's dumb. They're non indiginous, they should be killed on sight. If they really want to get rid of them, put a bounty on them. Seems if there's motivation, people have no problem eraticating animals.

I thought it would be something like "cube them up and use for catfish bait?" Doesn't flow as well off the tongue as "SSS," admittedly.....

Or, BBQ and serve to unknowing relatives. "It's chicken... (then in a whisper: "...of the swamp!")"

Let me see if I have this correct. Some goes out an catches the Python, now he can not kill it, but when he brings the Python in some one else is going to kil it, right? Yea that makes sense. No not at all

jwp,
It is called government job creation. Hire more Conservationist Officers then hire Veterinary or their Asst. to euthanize. Great for the economy and the hunters huh?

I grew up in south FL, and never heard of such. Ive heard tell of snake hunts, where FWC would take several officers and hunt snakes for 2 weeks at a time, and kill all the ones they found. Ive spent a lot of time in the woods down their and have never run across one, but I, and anyone I know, would shoot on sight. Those things need to go, and people need to get enough sense to quit turning them loose in the first place.
I dont think #4 would be big enough. They found one that had eaten a six foot alligator, the snake couldnt digest it and died because of the alligator swelling with decomposition. Id think a 44 mag or 00 buck would be more appropriate, or a high powered rifle from a little safer distance. The idea of trapping one seems like fun though. Ive never trapped a snake, but Ive trapped enough hogs to have lost count. Seems like a snake that big would be a challenge. Any body got any ideas on how to trap one? I do, but theyre not very humane. Not sure how youd do it without harming the snake.

Do like Merlin Perkins did years ago on his show (can't remember the name of it right now but it was sponsored by Mutual of Omaha Insurance). They built a cage into which they placed a live pig. The snake entered the cage, swallowed the pig but could not get back out through the bars for the size of its belly now holding the pig.

Wait...Wild Kingdom...that's it!:D

I remember everything I see, hear and read...I just cannot recall much of it though.:(

On trapping. how about a bear trap or a coyote getter with 00 buck? How about a spring loaded wire snare. I like the caged piglet idea. not afraid to be unPC.

I think the average snake is a lot smaller than the 18 footers you hear about. It would have to be pretty self adjusting so that it could catch really small to really big snakes. Remember the old chinese finger cuffs? The things that you put your finger in as a kid, and couldnt get it out, cause the harder you pulled the tighter it got? Seems like something of that nature, on a much larger scale, and tied to a heavy drag of some sort, so that the trap would be able to move, without releasing the snake. I dont know if any of that made any sense, just an idea.

Should Ring-necked pheasants (also non-indigenous) be in the same category and also exterminated? I agree with exterminating the Pythons in Florida, but not because they're introduced.

Killing snakes. OK. So....what is the "kill zone" on a 12 foot python? Assume that you want to be humane, where do ya shoot it to insure a quick demise? The CNS is the best but on any snake - any reptile - it's a small target.
