A friend gave me some Kroil. I've read that it's good for getting lead and copper fouling out of the barrels of firearms. Any recommendations as to how to use it? How long should I let it sit and work before attempting to remove the lead or copper fouling? All information would be appreciated. Thank you.

I apply via soaked patch and let it sit for 20 to 30 mins. then use Remington Bore Paste. In my opinion it is not a good "stand alone" cleaner but is a great addition to the Bore Paste.

I have had some success using Kroil to remove leading. I soak a loose fitting patch and liberally wet the bore and let it sit an hour or so, and then run a dry tight fitting patch through. Repeating if it unsuccessful at first. If you are successful, you will get striations of lead coming out with the patch. Kroil is a creeping lubricant not a solvent. It can get into microscopic crevaces and break the bond between the lead and metal bore of your firearm. It doesn't always work well for me, but when it does, it is quite impressive. I like Sweet's 7.62 copper solvent for removing copper fouling.

Does seem to penetrate well. I follow it with plain oil ! NOT worth the price that Kano asks for it.

Kroil is the most beautiful penetrating oil there is for freeing unholy rusty and filthy bolts (i.e. on ag equipment). Too expensive for 'general' use, though. I don't care for it at all as a gun cleaner, but I know those who swear it's wonderful.

I use it for cleaning. Works very well with some type of bore paste. I make Ed's Red cleaner using it, cleans quickly, dissolves crud well and prevents corrosion.

I agree with MZ5, Beautiful product for what it is intended. What most people are missing is the point of a product.

Why would you want to use a penatrating oil for gun cleaning?? Well they usually chew the snot out of powder fouling; However for the price why would you use Kroil for that purpose?!!

IF powder is what you are trying to clean, use WD-40, chews up powder fouling and for the price, is hard to beat.

Try AFT and acetone mixed together, if you need a LOT of penetrating oil cheaply.

Is about time. Kroil is purdy fast.

Slow soak in kerocene will get you there, but will take longer.

Yes. Read about it in Machinist's Workshop, I think. A good writeup with some testing. I doubt the proportions have to be terribly exact, "some" of each ought to do....

I remember trying that mix after reading a thread here MikeG. So I mixed a small amount for testing. Unclenick came up with something that allowed them to do so in his testing.

Purdy sure this occured before "Gun cleaning" existed as a forum. Not sure where to perform a search, or what terms to use? I do know that I and Unclenick posted in the thread though! Might find it that way?

Kroil is awesome stuff... its a bit pricey but it lasts a really long time too. I like the Aero Kroil. I don't use it to clean the bore, I use to to wipe down the metal and clean the carbon from my auto shotguns. It also does great on the plastic buildup in shotgun barrels, but thats not much of an issue for me.

Kroil is good stuff, I have friend that swears by a mix of kroil and hoppes #9 50/50. Which reminds me I may have to give that a try.

kroil does not remove anything. It is a penetrating oil period. When used in combination with JB Bore Paste and JB Bore Shine it will facilitate cleaning your bore, but by itself it is almost useless as a bore cleaner

I always use Kroil after i run a few dry patches. Some times I get cabin fever in the winter and will run a fresh patch thru with kroil, once in awhile I find they were not as clean as I thought.I'm sold on it!

I mix Kroil 50/50 with Shooters Choice bore cleaner, and use that mix as a powder solvent- it works very well.
I agree that Kroil works well with JB, too.
