I am very new on the forum. Hello all. My name is David and I live in the area of Prescott, Arizona. I enjoy getting out and shooting while the weather is warm, but I am at a disadvantage for location. I am just a couple miles from state land and national forest, but I live without a vehicle for personal reasons and I am very tired of getting stopped many times between the house and fields by police because a passerby saw my rifle on my shoulder and thought I was up to no good.

I am wondering if anyone has had the same or a similar issue. I have been reduced to carry a collapsible Henry Rifle, but that is at a great loss of accuracy. I am just wondering what options there are in a way to carry a full rifle without it drawing attention as a rifle would.

Welcome to the best shooting forum on the WWW. I would consider an aluminum type hard case for carrying your weapons. If your gun breaks down a small hard case would not stand out. An aluminum pistol case would look like a briefcase or tool box. Times have changed. As a kid, we used to carry our 22 rifles everywhere we went. Nobody paid any attention to us.

Welcome to Shooters Forum, Palmer. That's an interesting question you pose.

I have hiked back into some rough country and instead of taking along a full-sized rifle, I take a T/C Contender with a 10" barrel that will fit inside my pack. I've enjoyed those trips a lot more, having fewer things to carry on my way in to hunt. If you want better accuracy from a rifle that breaks down, you could do far worse than a carbine length barrel and a Contender or Encore frame.

Naturally, in Arizona, you have a perfect right to openly carry a firearm - even a concealed one, without a permit. Hope you inform the enforcement agency that stops you of this.

That said, how 'bout doing as MikeG suggests? Invest a few bucks in a soft case that has a shoulder strap and sling it over your shoulder?

I have a browning BLR takedown in .308 with a browning soft case that looks about like a briefcase slung over my shoulder when I'm carrying it. Not the cheapest route, but effective for your purposes. I also hunt with an encore, and that or a contender as suggested by broom_jm is a good option as well. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

I agree with open carrying and I would deal with law enforcement asking me questions, people need to get used to others exercising their constitutional rights. If you are doing nothing else wrong, tote it proudly.
