I just bought a rem 770 7mm mag. I have a rem 700 7mm mag but could not pass on the price. I was thinking my brother could use it when we bear hunt. I have heard so many bad things about the 770 since I bought it...but after taking it to the range I have to say I love it. Very accurate and it was soo cheap. Yes the action on the 700 is a bit better, (niether comes close to the mauser action) I think this rifle gets a bad rap for no practical reason. It's cheap to buy, accurate as ****, and if you care much about what it looks like, well, your not buying a dress.

At least it's better than the 710:D

I sighted in my buddy's 770 in .270win and it sighted in and grouped quite well. It had a sturdy feel to it and really, for a backup gun in the cabinet it should do ok for that purpose.

Hope your brother bags that bear with it.

I also think its miles ahead of the 710... that was a disaster for Remington. Looking forward to a success story from that rifle for your brother!

I think if I was going to buy a discount rifle, it would be a Marlin XS/XL7, they are under $300 and there isn't a bad report about them. Heck, I might buy one just because I want one (in 7/08)!
