I haven't seen one up close, so I can't verify or deny the claims of high precision machining, but if it is as claimed it should be a very good platform. The larger sights and lowered Goldcup style ejection port with rollover relief are not original to the 1911 design, but are desirable from a practical standpoint. The flat black oxide finish and stainless bushing are not original, either, but the black finish is commonly desired to get the low glare of military Parkerizing combined with the darkness of the original design's bluing.

The stainless bushing doesn't add or subtract anything serious to my mind. If you are worried about potential stainless galling, there are a number of things you can do to fairly permanently lubricate it, but it's not normally an issue at the bushing.

I also put beavertail grip safeties on my 1911's because I tend to choke up high on the grip frame and the standard grip safeties redden the web between my thumb and index finger, limiting how many rounds it is comfortable to shoot. I also install a lowered thumb safety, but that's from Gunsite training and if you don't use their gun handling techniques, you may never care. My point is that changes are typically easy to make to the 1911 because of the interchangeability of so many parts. If for some reason you weren't satisfied with it as it comes out of the box, you can change it.

I looked at one in a gun store. It seemed to be well put together. If you want ramp integral with the barrel, then you won't get that. But I guess folks either want a "genuine" 1911 or not. Since I own a Kimber with a ramped barrel, guess I fall into the "other" category!

Seems to me it's as good as anything else out there, and probably better than a lot of other stuff.

Thanks for the reply. I am looking to get a 1911 that has the look and feel of the original, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be 100% accurate. For example I like the better sights and improved ejection port on this model, and I actually like the look of the stainless bushing. I have fired a friend’s R1 and it was very comfortable to shoot and fit my hand well. I didn’t have any problem with the slide or hammer biting my hand so I don’t think
lack of a beaver tail will be a problem. Also the safety fit my thumb perfectly.

Can you be more specific on the bad things you have heard about the R1?

I have been thinking about getting one as a "test bed" to learn how to work on a 1911. It appears to be a reasonably well made gun from the online reviews I have read and the 2 I have handled. It is not a strict 1911 as was pointed out above, but a practical one. Close enough for me to play with.

All the same reasons why I like the Remington R1. I also like the short trigger as I don't have a large hand and I can wrap my trigger finger around the short trigger better. Remington is a reputable company and I don't hear many complaints about their customer service. Customer service is important to me because when something goes "south" you want to know that someone out there cares.

Here it is!!

Took it to the range last week for the first time. Only had 50 rounds on me so I didnt get to do that much shooting. I was using Remington 230g round nose ammo. Not a single jam or FTF. The gun fired all 50 rounds perfectly. Very smooth action and slide.

I cant really comment on accuracy yet sine the conditions at the range were horrible, and Im still a new shooter. But from what I have heard from others who have an R1, its very accurate.

I have heard very good things about this 1911. This is one I am actually looking into except I am looking at the enhanced version. Go to 1911 Addicts and read the review they give it.
Could you post the link to the range report? I scrolled through the first five pages and did a search, didn't find it. Thanks

Sr 1911

:( I ordered the new Ruger 1911 also ...they told me at least 90 days , but from what I've read and heard they are worth the wait. I checked out the R1 but decided to go with the Ruger.

My little brother bought a new Ruger a while back and says it shoots well and he loves it. I have no experience with the Remington 1911 myself, but their are others to look at like the Springfield, Rock Island Ect. just depends on your budget.
