I am going to buy a 45 auto in the next week or so and was looking at the new Remington, does anyone on here have one? or know anything about them. The gun shop I was at today had one, I liked the looks of the it. I guess one of my main concerns are, are they made in the U.S.A. or imported like the Remington model 798 rifles?, I perfer to only buy guns that are made in the U.S.A.. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

It depends what you prefer

The Remington 1911 R1 is really a 1911A1 clone and I handled one in a local gun shop. Nice gun, not sure who is making them. The only thing I did not like was the barrel busing left in the white instead of blued. After a bit, I ended up buying an excellent used Colt Series 80 in .45 ACP for the same money. So it depends. All the best...

I believe they are made here in the the US. I have not fired one but have looked them over and handled a couple .They seem to be well built solid and tight, however lots of sharp edges mostly around the mag well. Also on the models I have handled required the mag release to be pushed to insert the magazine.Maybe just a break in thing.

Like the rest, have looked at the Remingtons. My main question is do you want a gun with fixed or adjustable sights? There are advantages with the adjustable sight. If the gun does not shoot to where you want it, adjustable sights can be very helpful in moving the group be it for windage or elevation. If you plan on only shooting short distances at big targets, either sight will work equally well.

Have no problems with the barrel bushing being left in the white. It is this way on my match fitted Colt 1911 and given a light coat of oil doesn't seem, in my case, prone to rusting at all.

As to needing to depress the magazine catch when inserting a magazine, I think this will "break in" over time and will no longer have be done. In fact, I insert all of my magazines with the catch depressed in order to just reduce bluing wear on them. This should bring in a flood of comments.

Don't recall what the Remington retails for, however, Colts (new or used) seem costly today. Back in the 70's, I had the opportunity to purchase one of two mint condition used Colts both priced at $130. In retrospect, should have purchased both of them but that was a time when a dollar was worth a dollar and I was grossing $130 a week.

I am told they are made in the U.S. and have no reason to believe otherwise. I have shot two boxes of WinWhite FMJ out of one and taken it apart. I had no failures and, in my opinion, it is a dead-on clone for the A1. It rattles like one, too. For an entry level 1911 it should give years of good service. It has quite a bit better finish than an Armscor or Rock Island and is very similar to the Springfield in quality. That said, I agree with others - you can also find a good used gun for the same price, which will give you a number of choices.
