[MC One Shot]

I am looking at a Remington 700 P in a .338 Lapua. It has a 26" barrel steel barrel with an intergral muzzle brake, 40X trigger group, HS stock, looks like AI 5 round magazine and bottom metal, 9.5#. Does any one own one or have any solid information on this rifle.

I have searched the internet found some limited information but not much in reliable solid information.

Anthng you have woud be helpful. I do know that they are a limited run once in a while something like the 5R.

JWP, I noticed yours has a magazine. Is that a retrofit or did it come that way? I was thinking about changing my Sendero to na magazine like that. Are there retrofit kits for 700's?

Mine is a Custom and has the Seekins Detachable Box Magazine system

I guess the question for me is why buy a .338 Lapua? Ok if you are doing long range sniping but absent that it seems to me that you are getting a rifle that is overkill. If you are shooting at the kinds of ranges associated with police shooting then a .308 is adequate. Even a .300 Win Mag is questionable. The .338 Lapua has expensive, hard to locate brass, takes a shovel full of powder, and is a bear to learn to shoot properly. No question that it is a premier long range sniper caliber but do you really need that?

What does need have to do with owning any firearm? Police snipers don't even practice past 200 yards. What is overkill? The 338 Lapua is an excelent caliber

Everybit as accurate in a slightly more efficient form is the 338 RUM, brass is easy to get and it well stop a hummer at extended ranges. IMO a better choice.

How is he RUM a more efficient form? They hold nearly the same amount of powder. The Lapua brand brass is much better than the Remington brass. The Lapua case is a bit shorter and allows one to set the rifle up for an over all loaded lenght that allows the boatail to be seated at the neck shoulder junction for more even neck tension as the caes are resized and loaded multiple times. No need to turn the "doughnot brass build up at th neck shoulder junction

I also agree the 338 RUM is a better choice... its easier to find and much cheaper if you don't reload. Even if you reload the 338L is very expensive brass, $3 each vs. $1 each. Powder and bullet costs are the same. I doubt you get 3x the life out of the brass. I've gone about 10 loadings on 7 RUM brass with no issues as of yet.

I bought some RUM brass off of a guy, that had the factory firing and 3 reloads through them. With my case trimmer, it barely shaved anything off, and the primer pockets are still tight.

The last bags of remington brass I bought, 270 Win, 30-06, 7RUM, .350 Rem Mag, .357 Mag, .444 Marlin (2), .45 Colt (2), & .44 Mag (2) have had no culls and all had at least two extra pieces in them. This has all been within the last year.

The Lapua is a heck of a gun. If you can, go with
a .300 Winchester. It shoots far and hard and is
a lot cheaper to buy ammo for. The gun would
be a lot more inexpensive as well.

Wow, after wieghing and measuring intenal capacity I've always had a lot of culls with Rem brass, not to mention have to round and deburr the primer pockets

need is one thing.-want is another.-did you need all those TOYS at xmas-no,but you sure wanted them.when it comes to need, any one can make a case against almost any caliber you could choose

Define a lot? Given my experience with so many different calibers and having zero issues, I really have to doubt what you are saying. I've had winchester brass that split necks after one firing (.204 Ruger) Winchester replaced the entire 600 piece batch and sent me an extra bag at no cost and I haven't had any issues since then.

Dought all you want, but about 1/2. The primer pockets are punched, not drilled and need to deburred and evened up, the necks and shoulders are not annealed as is the Lapua brand 338 Lapua brass is when purchased, the wieghts are not very close and have to be sorted and this is where the culls come into play in my experience, The remington brass is tuff though

When talking about these big 338's I look at them as a great cartridge for long range hooting and hunting and approach the brass and loading procedures a bit different than I do for a rifle for normal hunting distances

I have several friends that shoot the 338 Edge and they report the same issues with the Rem brass
