Does anyone have knowledge with the Rem. 700 VTR in .243 Win. ? How is the accuracy? Another concern of mine is the 22" barrel with muzzle brake seems that it might fall short in the velosity department.

Not the VTR, but I do have the SPS (24" barrel) in 243 Win. and it's plenty accurate for varminting between 300-400 yards, with the limiting factor being my shooting abilities.

Besides the barrel and cosmetics, are they doing anything different with bedding or otherwise any action tuning? If so, I think you'll be very happy with the accuracy capabilities. If not, I think you might still be happy with SPS-type performance.

You can expect around 25 fps velocity loss at the muzzle per inch of shortened barrel, depending upon bullet weight and powder choices. Out at the target, those velocity differences at the muzzle are meaningless. Wind will have a much greater affect than bullet drop.

Thanks for the input. I wanted to retire my 788 .243. The 6mm bullet seems to do better on windy days than my 220 swift. The 700 SPS with 24" barrel might interest me more than the VTR with 20" useable barrel.

I would not want a 243 with a muzzle brake. The brake will send the muzzle blast right back at you. No need for it.

I would shop for another rifle. Look at the Winchesters, Rugers, Kimbers etc.

I have a 243 with a 22" barrel and it performs fine.

Tis not that kind of brake. It sends it straight up, not back.

I have a VTR in 308 and the brake is really good. Also I have found whilst hunting that the brake throws all/most of the sound straight up. So when shooting at foxs I get usually a second shot if Im off..

I can assure you the less recoil of the brake is tops! I have been down the range and shot off 100 rounds in a day no worries, go home without a sore shoulder. Where my mates after 20/30 rounds are rubbing their shoulders and bitching about it.

I have shot some pretty awesome groups with my rifle using target loads and with testing my new hunting bullet I was able to hit a fox in the head at 250-300m. I would say that should speak for itself.

I have a VTR in 223 and it shoots awesome, almost anything you get from Remington is going to be a shooter. Not a huge fan of the brake though, seems to me that none of the cartridges the VTR is chambered for really require a brake and just make the gun unnecessarily loud.

I'm trying to imagine the need for a muzzle brake on calibers like the 223, 243, or even the 308. Since it is porting the gas straight up, is the idea to improve accuracy, in some way? Hard to imagine much better accuracy than my dad gets with his standard Model 700 BDL, in 243. One hole is one hole...

Its all about recoil. But for me it serves 2 purposes. It throws the sound straight up(2nd shot at foxs if im off target) recoil is lighter. I know there are a lot of people out there that love the big thump on their shoulders.... But some of us just want a nice gun that you can shoot all day long

I just bought one and didnt look on line until after i bought it and found nothing but bad reveiws 80% of them. That disapointed me well i went to the range yesterday and shot my new 243 vtr I sighted it in with win. 100 grn at 100 yards and shot a 1/2 in. group Then switched to the hornaday 58 grn. sst my first two shots were one hole i shot several thight clover leaf groups with some one holes THE GUN SHOT AWSOME RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX WITH A 3X9 NIKON BUCKMASTER SCOPE. ONE HOLERS RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX AT A 100 YARDS HELLO WHAT A GUN. The people that wrote bad reveiws need to learn how to breath and shoot proper its not the gun or the amo. I recomand this gun the groups were still tight with a warm barrel.Nice design rem.

Vtr 243

It will still direct far more blast at your ears. Its not needed either.

I would not take a gun with one for nothing.
i WARE HEARING PROTECTION MYSELF AND THE GUN SHOOTS ONE HOLERS RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX AT 100 YARDS WITH A 20 IN. BARREL THIS GUN SHOOTS VERY ACURATE IF YOU CAN SHOOT, IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS, ITS NOT THE GUN, hEARING PROTECTION IS RECUIRED AT THE GUN RANGES I GO TWO. AND THERE ARE A LOT LOUDER GUNS SHOOTING THERE THEN THE LITTLE VTR 243.

The REM VTR 243 loves the hornaday superformance 58 grn. SST. I shoot one holers at 100 with them nice gun nice round the 100 grn. win will work fine on white tail. 58 for varmint and coy. And if the muzzle brake bothers some one cut it off its not part of the rifilling its a 20 inch barrel and very acurate and shoots acurate warm. The barrel is acurate but yet light to carry for hunting. why carry around those long heavy bull barrels that dont shoot any more accurate.

The only thing you will find with these rifles is you need to load the bullets for it HOT! Half loads and what not just wont cut it... THe hotter the better... But work your way up on them!

Another thing I have found is a barrel thats a bit "dirty" is better than a clean as a whistle barrel... Goes against my grain in most cases but I have noticed that it shoots a lot better when its a bit dirty....

Individual rifles will vary: Do not presume you "need" to load bullets hot in your new rifle just because someone else found that to be the case. In fact, the conventional logic is that the most accurate loads, with slower powders in the 243, typically come at 1 or 2 grains below max. Consult a recent reloading manual and stick with documented loads.

Most every barrel will shoot better with a little fouling than they will with a clean cold bore. Shooting for groups, with a clean bore at the start of every group, is usually going to be an exercise in frustration.

have to agree with broom becareful about loading heavy. i found the most accurate is the lighter loads and some even lighter than 1 or two grains.
