As mentioned above, while most Mauser 98's are Large Ring actions, there have been quite a few Small Ring Mauser 98 actions (some old/military, some modern / commercially made).
The Small Ring Mauser 98's can be identified by their cock-on-opening bolt, and a front receiver ring that's flush with the LH receiver sidewall.
Husqvarna made their own on the 1970's/80's, and branded some dor Smith & Wesson; and there were about 3-4 different military SR M-98 actions like the 1910 or 1936 Mexican Mauser, the VZ-33, VZ33-40 (both Brno made and pretty good), the KAR-98 (be carefull), and the VZ-47 and ZG-47 Brno commercial versions.
