Two words: cylinder blast. That won't be pleasant in any sort of modern high-pressure cartridge.
I would guess - purely speculate - that the long barreled revolvers for the U.K. were to either get around their particular gun laws, or for some sort of very specialized competition. Perhaps some of our U.K. members could elaborate.
I'd much rather have a single-shot break open rifle, than a revolver with a buttstock. Handy enough for what I would use it for and much less dangerous to the shooter!
