I tend to favor the H&R single-shot action, but both of them have the same basic pros n' cons. Break open guns are fine for shooters of any age, although they are not going to be quite as accurate as a bolt gun, on average. For big-game hunting, it will rarely be a big enough difference to matter. To get all three of those barrels, which are ideal for a young shooter, for $159, you almost can't go wrong. I started my son out with an H&R combo that included a .243 and 50 cal ML barrel and he has enjoyed shooting them.

When you pick it up, hopefully you can get 3-4 different types of .22 ammo to see if your barrel has a preference for one, over another. A good 4X scope, good-shooting .22LR and plenty of ammo to go through will keep a kid happy for quite a while...heck, it STILL makes me happy. :D
