I just picked up a Ruger #1 and I was wondering if anyone had a good load for the 45-70 in the mid to high end range using 400 grain cast bullets and surplus powder (Hi-Tech or Bartlett). I would like to use surplus powder, since I plan on shooting this rifle quite a bit. I do have quite a bit of WC820, and assume that I can use it for the low end loads (using 2400 data as a start).

Bartlett lists powders with H322, H335 and IMR3031 burning rates, but I have not been able to find any posts regarding their use.

Also, can someone suggest a load for fire lapping the barrel using either bullseye or 700-x.

Thanks,

For the lapping load, try 4 or 5 grains of Bullseye. Seat the lapping bullet backwards so that the base of the bullet is even with the mouth of the case, to minimize extra airspace.

Lapping loads are somewhat dependent on the gun, so you have to try a few and see if they stick bullets in the barrel, or go so fast that they lead, and adjust as necessary.
