what do i need to mount a scope on a savage 340? I know i need a #1 weaver side mount, but what about the rings? Are there any other setups?Thanks.

Weaver rings will fit.

Seems I had a different brand of mount on the old 340 years ago, but for the life of me can't remember the name.

Lots, I'd figure, but seeing as how it's a 30/30 anything over, say, 32/33mm would likely be overkill. I'd figure a nice 2-7x32 to be about puuurfect!!

2-7x32 very suitable for a 30-30. If you could use a 1.5-5x32, then consider a Nitrex by Weaver TR One at www.natchezss.com
Tr One similiar to a Weaver Grand Slam scope, has same optics and internals....made in Japan. Heck of a buy on this scope and has some very nice glass in it. Did Retail for around $300 but now discontinued and heavily discounted with a $50 Nitrex rebate. Can get it for $80 plus shipping.
