I am thinking about buying a Ruger Redhawk with a 5 1/2 inch barrel and may want to mount a red dot scope on it for deer hunting. I called Ruger and they said they don't reccommend putting a scope on it but would not give a reason why. They told me I would have to check with a gunsmith. Do you know of anyone who has placed a scope on this short barrel?

Yeah, you probably could, but it would be more trouble than necessary.  Brownells sells scope mounts to fit the redhawk; they would require that the frame be drilled and tapped.  Frankly, if you desire to add a red dot it would be a lot easier to get a scope model redhawk (with 7 1/2" barrel) or a SRH.  You get the rings with it, or 30mm ones if you desire, with no gunsmith work required.

Hi Taurus, You sure can get a Redhawk 5 1/2 in. barrel cut for Ruger rings. Mr. Hamelton Bowen  of Bowen Classic Arms did it for me and it worked great! They also make 30 MM. factory rings. So you could easly mount a red dot sight. When you remove the scope and then replace it the scope returns to zero or at least mine did. Hope this helps, and good shooting. Jack K.

I have a Redhawk with a 7 1/2 barrel, it is the way to go. I have a 30mm Millett Red dot sight on it. I had to order the 30mm rings but I still have the 1 inch rings if I need them later. It seems like a lot of work to mount on a 5 1/2 barrel. I think they do not recommend it because if a regular scope is used it will be to close to the muzzle?? I think the 7 1/2 would be a better hunting gun. <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://beartoothbullets.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->
