I agree with cvc944 that a low power Leupold, or similar, would make a good choice. I own a couple of Marlin lever rifles and have these scopes affixed: .356/336ER 1.5-4.5 Nikon Monarch, Marlin .375Win 1-3x20 Weaver V3, 1895 45-70 1-4x20 VXI SG, new .308MX will wear a VariXII 1-4x20.

A new Weaver V3 1-3x20 will run about $150. A new VXI 1-4x20 SG runs $200. Cabelas is running a $20/off sale on orders of $150 or more. They charge NO shipping on Leupold scopes and also give a free lens pen and neoprene cover with VXIs. So, total for all, delivered would be $180 for the VXI SG 1-4x20 !! An excellent deal. Sale ($20/off) is over on the 28th. If you need a coupon code, PM me and I'll send it to you!

I think I have 2-7 Leupolds on all (or most) of mine. The .444 may be a 2.5-8.

Just put a silver finshied Nikon Buckmasters 3-9 x 40mm on my 1895. Looks great and has very good optical quality. I'll see how it shoots soon enough.

Scope for .30-30

In my opinion, you can't beat a 1x4 or 1.5x5 powered scope for the .30-30. The .30-30 was my first derr rifle, given me by my father-in-law. With the low power variable, you are up for close-range running shots, but can still "zero in" on an animal at 150 yards with the higher power. Bushnell makes a great product at a reasonable price, so I'd look there. A good 4x scope will also work, provided you practice with it at close range.

Good luck and have fun!:)

I saw posted on another forum that Natchez had a deal on the Nikon Monarch 1.5-4.5 scopes, for under 200$.
I would want a low power scope on a 30-30, as the others posted. The Weaver V3 is a good scope for the price, too.
