Expert collectors with a lot of experience and some access to factory records can usually determine the DOM od a Model 39 by it's serial number and features.

Everyday working slobs, like me, can determine the DOM of a Model 39a (they're different models, you know) by the SN 's prefix letter, or (if it has no letter prefix) the first two SN digits.

IIRC, the Model 39a's with letter prefixed SN's started in 1946 with a "C". Some letters, like "I" (eye) and "O" (oh) weren't used for obvious reasons.

I have a Marlin Model 39 with a HS 33X serial number. Any help with this one?

The Model 39 was introduced in 1922, and did not carry a prefix.
Marlin 39's S prefix likely was first used in the 1925-26 era, based on serial number ranges for the non and S prefixed rifles.
The HS prefix was used beginning in 1932, until the introduction of the model 39A in 1939.

Your rifle most likely dates from 1932.

Regardless of the high-speed designation (HS), please use only standard or target velocity ammunition in your Model 39 !
(Or risk cracking the bolt)
