Have you ever been injured by a wild animal during a hunt? I had a close call while deer hunting in November 1985.

I was walking uphill on a narrow dirt path in a national forest. While I was looking down at the trail in front of me for tracks, I felt a slight vibration through my boots.

Before I had time to think about what was causing the vibration, I looked up, and around a bend in the path came a full-size buck running toward me as fast as he could. When the buck was about six feet from me he instantly side stepped the path and only missed me by inches.

Everything occurred so fast that I had to stop and sit down to think about what just happened. Or more importantly, what might have happened. If that buck hadn't made a last-second adjustment in his escape route, I would've had a very bad day at Blackrock!

I'm sure when he settled in for the night, Mr. Buck had an exciting story to tell his buddies too.

As the youngest in our **** hunting party years ago, I had to carry the tow sack full of *****. My uncle had just killed our fifth **** of the night and added it to the sack. As we prepared to turn the dogs loose again and move on, I slung the sack over my back and started following the group. One of the ***** was not dead and took a big bite out of my back through the sack. I began screaming and hollaring and running in circles with the sack hanging from my back. My grandfather finally knocked the **** sack loose from my back with a rifle butt. I still carry a scar on my back from that little episode.

Attacking Buck

A number of years back my Uncle got charged. During the Fall rut he was walking along an old RR grade and a big buck stepped out of the swamp onto the grade. He must have thought my Uncle was another big buck. He lowered his head and charged. My Uncle always carried a little Colt .32ACP. As the deer got close my Uncle started shooting. 2 rounds thru the head stopped the buck ... about 10' from my Uncle.
