Hi all.i have a p226 in 40s&w and I love it. I'm having my first issue with it though after 5 years of no problems: when I have a round in the chamber and the hammer decockeda I am unable to discharge said round in the chamber. Now if I manually cock the hammer back on the same said round it will fire no problem. Any ideas what could be causing this? I have used about 5-8 different types of rounds and it happens regardless of the maker. Also I have cleaned the gun as prescribed in the owners manual and still the same results.

If I understand correctly, when the hammer is decocked, pulling the trigger will not cock the hammer (as is DA). If this is correct, then the Hammer Reset Spring (HRS)may be broken.

If you look at the back of the hammer, towards the bottom, there should be a small wire that is the HRS, it should rock the hammer back away from the slide and reset the hammer so that the Trigger Bar can cock the hammer in DA mode.

If you release the hammer to the fired position, and hold it against the slide, you should be able to see the hammer move away from the slide when you remove your fingers from the hammer. If it doesn't, then the HRS is broken or otherwise damaged. Do this test with the muzzle pointed downwards.

Every part in a Sig can be easily checked in a few steps by dry firing double action, single action and holding the trigger back when operating the slide to see if it cocks the hammer with the trigger held fully rearward etc. Trying several brands of ammo would make no sense at all if the hammer was not picking up in DA mode since a mechanical issue would obviously exist. Having a little faith in common sense, I assume the hammer is moving in both DA and SA modes but only fires in SA mode. A good cleaning will most likely cure a weak DA strike.

Send it back to Sig, first owner or not.....They WILL make the gun right, and most times, pay the frieght both ways.
Chances are, as thorough as their gunsmiths are, they'll give your pistol the once over for free too!!!

In the past I've sent them my 228, as well as my 245 and Mosquito. Always had a great experience with them, and very fast turn around.
My 228 just needed new night sights, the 245 had a bad extractor, the mosquito just a mag issue..[more like a a user problem]
