Can you shoot slugs through a barrel that has screw in chokes?   If so what choke would you use?

i've shot varoius slugs through my Rem 1100's with screw in chokes....as far as accuracy goes if i were you i would buy a few boxes of slugs and see what works the best...i'm pretty sure that you would find a particular slug has a favorite choke---by the way-the new sabot type slugs are where it's at-the old style slugs don't stand a chance against them....Dick

What kind of chokes are they?  If rated for steel, probably no harm, but I did shoot a slug through a choke once, and cause it to stick in the barrel.  It was not rated for steel though.

   How about elaborating on the slug load that caused your choke tube to stick in the barrel.       What type of choke tube/gun was used?  Was the barrel damaged?

It was an ordinary Foster-type slug.  Can't remember the choke tube constriction but may have been modified.  The choke tubes were aftermarket, that is, they had been installed in a fixed-choke barrel (reamed and tapped of course).

They were not rated for steel shot.  Gunsmith got the tube out, it was ruined but barrel was fine.

I would start with an Improved cylinder/Cylinder bore choke tube. These tubes in a smaller constriction can not match the strength of an actual barrel with a tighter choke in and of itself. That's why slugs can usually be shot satisfactorily through BARRELS with tighter chokes.

The Brenneke slugs usually run quite hard also. I believe they are a lead alloy and not pure lead.

Sounds like what happened to Mike G was that the tube actually got expanded by the slug passing through just enough to make it very hard to unscrew without actual damage to the barrel itself.

Since my first post, I bought a remington 870   3 1/2 pump gun with a slug barrel and a 28 inch regular barrel with a mod. screw in choke.  I used the slug barrel with sabot slugs and the result was simple amazing to me.  I had a three shot group with iron sights from 60 yards at around three inches.  I hunted with this gun during our two day shotgun season, and shot a doe at 17 yards.  The result?  total devistation...she never took a step.  I would use this gun any time and you are talking to a man who has used rifles all his life.  I have changed my mind and would suggest this type of hunting to any one

There aren't too many things that can walk away from a 72 caliber, 1 oz. hunk of lead at about Mach One+ velocity. Sabot slugs of course run lighter but for pure woods ranges, you'll never feel wanting with Mr. Shotgun under your arm.
