Well I bought a Smith and Wesson Sigma SW40V today at Academy Sport & Outdoor.

I took it straight to the range (I didn't even clean it - shame on me)

Well it shot well, my only complaint is a very hard trigger pull.

Absolutely not one problem - I only had 50 shells with me (bought with the gun).

First .40 I've owned, does anyone know the difference between a .45 & a .40?

Beyond that you're gonna get into HIGHLY disputed territory. Fasten your seat belt!

Personally, I love the 45 acp, but most of my carry guns are now 40 SW.

The sigma has a trigger more like a double action revolver than the Glocks/SAs/M&Ps etc. I think this a pretty desireable, because you know you are ulling the trigger and that makes it much safer than the DAO pistols with light triggers that can go off if you try sliding them in a holster with a thumbsnap. I have a 9mm version and my buddy has the 40 version and they are both great pistols. My carry gun is a .40 S&W M&P compact.

As leverite pointed out, the main difference between the 40 and and 45 is the bullet diameter (one is .40" and one .45"). The 45 bullets are also heavier, from 185 - 230 grains, compared to 135-180 grains in the 40.

I don't know if I would say the 45 is "better" than the 40, but it has been around about 80 years longer.

I also have a S&W SW40VE, mine has been perfectly reliable for at least 5 years, and yes it has a long, heavy trigger pull.

I only have two 40 pistols, the S&W and a Kahr K-40. The K-40 has a great trigger and is much smaller, but also cost a good bit more than the S&W.

In the comparison between .40 and .45, IMO, they're about equal. The .40 is small and fast. The .45 is big and slow. If one of those makes you feel better about the round, go with it. For me, I wouldn't choose or refuse a gun because it shot one or the other.

You can get used to the trigger. And, if someone would get their head out of their rear and create an after market piece or kit to lower that trigger pull down to being equal to the Glocks and XDs, that someone would make a MINT, considering how many of those Sigmas people buy.

50 rounds isn't a very thorough test, though. My rule of thumb is shoot 200 rounds through it before you feel confident in it. You will likely have broken it in by then, and any problems with manufacturing will probably have shown up by then.

They kinda dropped the Sigma name and just go buy the model number now, SW9VE, SW40VE, etc. Not sure if that helped or hurt but it works for me.

I bought my S&W 40 last year and I felt when I was testing them out that the trigger on the 40 for me were easier to pull.

Was that the M&P or the SW series? I have both and the M&P has a much lighter trigger pull.

I sell guns, I'll tell you that name is rather annoying. "Wow, that's cheap for a Sig." "Well, that's not a Sig." "It says Sig." "It says sigMA. It's a Smith & Wesson."

And most of your customers really know nothing about guns and will buy something because its either cheap or they assume its a very good gun because its expensive.

Luckily the Sigma is both cheap and a very good gun.

Lighter Sigma trigger pull

There would seem to be a strong market for a fix to the heavy Sigma pull. Anyone know a gunsmith who can tackle this problem successfully ? I'd be interested ! Make a nice pack weight pistol for long distance hikes IF the trigger could be lighter !

The folks at the S&W forum say this is the place to have the Sigma Trigger fixed. http://www.lsgmfg.com/index.htm They say it is even free-done under S&W warranty.

I just bought one of these SW40VE's myself. Straight to the range from the gun shop. No problems at all. I'd leave the trigger alone. Ya get used to it. I like the heavier pull myself.
