I just bought this rifle from my buddy. can't find anything about the sportsman 78. If anybody has any info about this rifle I'd appreciate it.

Are you sure it's a Winchester not a Remington?

Google search shows this to be a Remington manufacture. You can Google it and get all the info you need.

I have a Sportsman 78 in .270 Winchester

It was made by Remington and is a tack driver. All the best...
