So..... bored out of my mind this weekend, I looked at 73 of the most popular caliber offerings out there. Well, at least according to the mighty Chucky Hawks. Looking at everything from the 204 Ruger to the 460 Weatherby Magnum

Range of bullet weights from 33 gr to 500
MV from 4,225 (204 Ruger) to 1330 (45-70)
Energy 7504 (460 WM) to 723 (22 Hornet)

And what would the average cartridge look like??

It would be going 2798.8 FPS and have a MV of 2,851.9 Ft/Lb with a bullet weighing 180.43 grains

Yep, you guessed it. A 30-06 with 180's

How that for some boring data?

That's an interesting observation. You've got to come right up tor SAAMI max pressure to move a 180 that fast from a standard 24" length test barrel, but you can get close with Reloader 17 and few others. A 26" tube makes it a lot easier to make 2800 fps.

Federals 180 TSX load comes close at 2,700 fps (their numbers)

Veddy veddy intedesting.....but stoopid ! :D
Kinda like most of the "What caliber should I get" threads, huh?

Rodney Dangerfield was a hilarious man.

Sorry I pooed your thread. You definetly win the most bored award...lol Doesnt change the fact the 30-06 should be retired.

Haha. Is there a reason why I fail to be surprised that Tang would graph for us, the .30-06 vs. the .300 RUM...apparently just because? :p

Pretty neat... I haven't done it but I bet there are more .300 variants (.30-30, .308 Win, .30-06, etc.) than any other caliber as well.

Why buy a 30-06 when you could buy a 300 win mag and accomplish much more with just a little more recoil?

Or why buy a .300 mag when you can accomplish the same things with a .30-06, with less recoil???? :p :p :p

Good point. My guess is for the price difference in ammo, 90% of the shooters would be more deadly with a .30-06 and the affordable additional long range practice than they would be with a .300 Win Mag.

And really - If you need more horse power than the .30-06 and can handle additional recoil, wouldn't a .338mag or .325WSM (or 8mm Mag if you can find one) be a better choice than a .300 Win Mag?

I used the 300 win mag as an example because it is also .30 cal. Im not going to open the same ol can of worms so Ill retract my comment.
