Hello reloaders friends.

I have been wanted to buy a AR platform, I am a complete ignorant in this kind of side of
Arms.

Now this may be a long term buy so I need to get one that will fit my needs
I have seen some calibers in mind.308 win and 6.5 creedmoor.
It may be hard and pricey to get the 6.5 . To be true about don't know wich will be better
I don' t have any semi auto rifles since I always look for accuracy in my rifles.

Reason for the 308 and 6.5 is for the ability of good range time as well of hunting time.

Also if I decided to go on a used one what signs of ware do I need to look for, I don't usually go that route on semi auto or varmit rifles.

Like always
Thanks in advance.

The AR15 in .223/5.56 is the most common and all parts interchange between uppers and lowers. Other cartrigdes on this shorter lighter platorm run from .22LR up to .458 SOCOM but remember the have to fit inside a M16 mag. There are some good whitetail cartridges available for this rifle ie 6.5 grendal/6.8 SPC/.300 RAR/7.62x39/.300 Whisper/.450 Bushmaster/.458 SOCOM. My experince is with the 5.56 ctg with numberous bbl lengths for the last 30 yrs around the world.

The AR10 was orginally designed for the 7.62mm NATO/.308 Win (it was designed first, then scaled down into the AR15). So basically any .308 based case will work, ie .243/.260/7mm-08/.338Fed/.358 win will work. Most companies do not full interchange so do your homework on this one. Same with magazines. My only experince on this platform was the SR25 in 7.62 for government work.

CD gave you a great explanation there;
Right to the point.
The .308 winchester case based family of bullets will run fine. If you reload, do not hot rod.

You'll get a million responses as to which caliber is best, as that's the way these threads run. When you get muddied by it all, go back to CD's post.

Personally. I'd look to the Rock River Arms LAR-8 platform if you want a 308 sized AR. I did and now I have one on order. My brother also has a 243 Lar-8 on order.

The August issue of Shooting Times has a large article on the LAR-8 Predator and the author was extremely impressed. It comes in 243, 7-08, or 308 and more calibers are on the way as custmer demands call for them. The 308 comes as a complete rifle, but the 243 and 708 require you to buy a lower reciever and the upper reciever separately. It actually comes out about $100 less doing it that way.

The 308 LAR-8 barrels are Wilson Stainless Steel air gauged and hand lapped and shoot groups so small it's scary. The LAR-8 also uses the plentiful and inexpensive FAL magazines with all the cartridges offered.

The RRA isn't cheap [mine was $1580, my brother's $1450], but they have a reputation of staying together, being top quality, and NOT having issues like the DPMS, R-25 models.

I shoot the AR10t and the AR10 A4, both 7.62. The AR10t I load for using the the Nosler 168 grain Custom Competition, IMR 4064, Fed cases and Winchester primers.
I use this combo for plinking at 300 to 500 yards using the red plastic yogurt lids as targets.
The AR10 A4 is good with Wolf 150 grain out to 400 yards plinking steel gongs.
Have fun

IMO you need to go over to AR15.com and do a LOT of reading. It is all about ARs over there and there is a lot of good and (and bad sadly) information. Weed through it and read a lot before asking questions. Every question you can think of has been asked there so use the search feature if you cannot find an answer easily.

I would choose the 308 over the 6.5 for the practicality aspects, and wear can be tough to gauge accurately.

Ok, Here are a few highlights.
First off, no, NOT ALL parts interchange. There are 2 basic styles of lower receivers in the 308 platform. There is the DPMS style, and the Armalite style(double check with ar15.com). The difference is in how the receiver is cut. At the buttstock part of the receiver, one is round, and the other is slanted. Albeit with a gap, you can put the slant cut upper on the round lower, but NOT vice-versa.
The other thing to consider with the lowers is what mag type they take. CMMG makes a lower(I have one) that accepts the HK G3 type mag. Those mags are CHEAP compared to the alternatives.
Most of the fire control parts interchange, but sometimes aren't long enough to fit flush. Hasn't caused me any function issues, but does look bad...

Caliber choice. DPMS, AKPARTSKITS, Olympic etc. sells kits that are complete, as well as complete rifles, so the seperate upper business is hogwash if you want a 243, etc.

As for the specific question of Creed. Vs. 308. That is completely up to you. Technically, the Creed will be supersonic much further than a 308, with drastically lower time of flight. Remember that you must full length resize if you are going to be doing reloading. Also find a manual(speer) that gives specific reloading info on gas system rifles. AR's are very particular when it comes to pressure duration, and curve for reliable/proper operation.
