Just traded for a T/C White Mountain Carbine in 50 cal. Does anyone have a favorite load for these short barrel rifles?

Thanks.

Powder charges, roundball/patch combination, or any non-roundball projectile thoughts welcome.

It depends

In my .50 caliber muzzleloaders, I use about 80 grs. of FFG black powder, a .010" lubed patch and a .490" roundball. The powder charge may vary a bit until I find an accurate load. Hope this helps. All the best...

I think they had a 1-38 twist. Which means they should shoot conical bullets real well. I would suggest low powder charges because of the barrel length. If it were me I would start with about 80 grains of Pyrodex RS and some 370 grain maxiball. Some other conical bullets to try would be the Great Plains Conicals and some No Excuses.

It should also shoot sabots. Try a 240 - 300 grain XTP and again with 80 grains and see what happens.

Get REAL

For the TC I favor the LEE R.E.A.L. (rifling engaged at loading) 320 grain bullet. and 100gr. of Goex fffg. I also prefer the adjustable Patridge sights as were used on the early TC Renegade. These are easy to see, give a great index of elevation, and don't compromise the easy cleaning nature of the hooked breach system. Also I suggest rigging up a simple tie on safety tube to place over the nipple and under the hammer for fully loaded carry.
