Hi guys! After a few months on deciding that my second gun will still be a revolver I still haven't made up my mind yet. I have two options, a brand new stainless steel Taurus Model 689 6" barrel or an old blued carbon steel Ruger Security Six 4" barrel. Putting the price aside, which one is the better revolver?

Thanks, appreciate it!

I only own one Taurus revolver and it's been a very dependable and good shooting firearm. Given those choices though, the Ruger would be my choice without question.

The old Security Six class of revolvers are great. I constantly scour gun shops, pawn shops, etc for a 2 3/4" Security or Speed Six. They are getting pretty rare and pricey.

I would choose a new Charter Arms Bulldog Pug over a Taurus.

Ruger. No contest. Too many problems with the other.
Problems such as?

My only issue with the RSS is that its not too stylish. It looks more like a mountain gun than something that you want your girl to be impressed with. It just doesn't look sexy. Its like comparing a model to a housewife. Though, its a housewife that would make you happy for life.

Taurus quality ( while improved since the 80s ) is still a crapshoot. I have seen and heard of all types of problems. Cylinders out of time, tight chambers, cross-threaded screws, even saw a model 66 that the barrel was out of line the rear sight. literally the front sight was at 11:00. My brother had a 92, hit the mag release and everything fell out the mag well. We had a .22 mag revolver at the store I help at that bottomed out the trigger scale.

Want me to continue?

I could never understand anybody buying one. You save a couple of bucks but it's just not worth it. I've seen too many with problems that just shouldn't have happened. You wonder how they even got out of the plant. They must have some appeal to some people but I've never understood it. Pay a few dollars more and get a lot better gun with either a Ruger or a Smith.

Please do so.

Also, would you recommend chroming the finish of the RSS to make it look brand new or a reblue would be more advisable? It is old and the front of the cylinder is faded due to the hundreds maybe even thousands of round fired. But the rest of the gun still looks new. It even has the original black hard case, relabeled packmyr grips, speedloaders and ammo that came with the package, although some of the rounds have been fired. By the way, how much much do you think the whole package is worth? My friend is selling it to me for $300. Is it worth more than that?

If you like the Taurass,go with it. I'd take the Ruger.
