Today I was shooting with the old guys. These guys can shoot, I've talked about them already. Today, I did something I never thougt I'd ever do. I knocked over a 10" pig at 400 yards, off hand with my 22" barrelled 444 Marlin SS. Its an older Microgroove, I was shooting the Hornady 265s with H4198. I was previously trying at 500 yards to knock over a 24" Ram, but I failed to in 5 shots, so one of the other guys did it with his 1895 in 405 Win. He's a pretty good shot. I normally shoot my M1 Garand, but it needed to be cleaned and I was lazy.

I also managed to smack a 100 yard 12" Ram 3 out of 5 times with my S&W M&P .40.

I hit it on the first shot, Irv with his .405 knocked over the big Ram in one as well. We both had trouble with the smaller 8" chickens at those distances though.

Well, I did and I didn't. I hit the second one with a bullet fragment but didn't knock it over. 3 more shots and I didn't hit it again. Oh well, I was plenty impressed with the first shot, especially since I said I wasn't going to hit anything but dirt right before I knocked it over.

The big mistake is to take a second shot after hitting the first. It's difficult to walk away with a smug look on your face while complaining about the cloud of gnats out there at about 250 yards that were distracting you. . .

I won't lie, that was a 1 in 20 shot for me. I didn't expect to hit it and I'm certainly not good enough to repeat that shot. I do shoot with several guys that are that good though, and much better as I've seen them shoot farther and at harder targets like a softball at 200 yards, off hand, with a 45-90.
