Does anyone know why they stopped making this rifle in this caliber? It has to be the best hunting rifle I've ever had. As I get older firing 200 grain Noslers gets a bit hard on my shoulder but with handholds I can set up a Sierra 125 grain Spitzer that will take any muledeer I see here in Montana. Is that nowadays people feel they need more than one shot. This gun is so accurate I've never needed more than one. Does it mean that our hunters just aren't developing the shooting skills they should have before going out?

Welcome dfcurran.

Other than DRC's wisdom, which provides most of the explanation, possibly they kicked too hard for most people. You didn't offer your reload data for the 125 gr Spitzer, but it is an odd choice for that large case. Are you pushing it fast, or a mild load?

A word of caution on using the125 grain Prohunter. I have a .308 that shoots that bullet very well. At 3000 fps it borders on the edge of being a grenade when hitting any substantial bone. Can't imagine the results if running full throttle in a magnum.

Have one - it's for sale if I get around to it. Had muzzle brake installed. Tore up a Redfield Ultra-Illuminater scope twice. Very accurate with factory ammo, I posted the results of hot loaded 125 grain ballistic tips earlier that fragmented before hitting a 100 yard target at 3800 fps. The only single shots I now hunt with are muzzle loaders - have both deer and elk tags for them this year.
