Got a 1939 date on top of reciever but has a cock on opening 2 lug bolt. What cal is it , and would it be safe to shoot?

Most likely 8x57 mauser. See what other markings are on the barrel, if any. Sounds like the Turk copy of the 98 mauser.

Never a bad idea to have headspace checked. You never know.....

The importer may have electro-penciled the caliber marking under the front sight. Could be somewhat hidden by the cleaning rod (if you have one). If it's an original barrel, then it's 8x57 for sure. Anyway, American 8x57 ammo is quite mild (ie. Remington, Winchester). Not sure about the S&B stuff. Surplus varies from mild (Romanian) to wild (Turk), with Yugo in between.

I'd start with American stuff and work my way up. Read up on cleaning with water before you mess with surplus.

Someone also has a Persian Mauser they offered to trade for one of my fine Swedes, but haven't seen any action in the F to F meetings in the last few years! :rolleyes:
