Have seen favority rifles, favorite ctgs, ugly gun articles etc. Never have seen anything about ugly and or useless ctgs. That got me to thinking that maybe somebody other than me thinks that some ctgs are ugly and or useless. Just for the sake of conversation, Gotta put the 303 Brit and the French Libal ctgs as an even tie for rifle ctgs, and the 25 Auto as the most useless.
Not to say that the French and the Brit won't shoot, because the do, but just don't find them best to look at. They are definately not in the look catagory of the 06, or the 222 Rem, or the 6.5 x 55. (I don't like short necked rifle cases by the way). Will be interested to see if this generates any response.

I've heard it said that the 505 Gibbs is the most inefficient cartridge ..... that is, the ballistics you get are a shadow of what you'd expect given the size of the case.

I hate to say it, but one of my favorite rifles is chambered in a really ugly cartridge. The 300 H&H Mag is ugly to me. Don't get me wrong, I love it, it's like a old cur dog, ugly as sin, but loyal to the end. It's one of my favorite rounds, but it is ugly. Any of the sloped cased, long neck, slumped shouldered cartridges are kinda ugly to me, even though I have several of them. I like them, but they ain't super models.

By the way, the 300 H&H is probably the prettiest rifle I own, chambered for the ugliest cartridge.

I've thought about this a bit and I had a hard time coming up with one. But I finally thought of one - I don't like the looks of straight walled cartridges when they're loaded with pointed bullets. I've seen .458's loaded with X-bullets that I thought were kind of goofy looking.
For the most part I think cartridges are like women - most all of them have SOMETHING going for them! IDShooter

One cartridge that struck me as ugly is the 585 Nyati. It looks over-proportioned and has kind-of-sort-of-a-shoulder, but I'd love to try to shoot one of those things.......maybe once!

I would say the 7.62x39 as one of the uglyist. And I would have to agree with Paul that the 25 Auto is the most usless.

This is kinda off topic here, but I've seen quite a few ugly guns (think Mossberg 22's in the early 80's), but while looking at the latest edition of Rifle, I have undoubtly seen the ugliest rifle ever made. The Kifaru Mountain Rifle, to me, is down right ugly. Just a personal opinion, and I hope I don't offend anyone. Hopefully this is not a sign of things to come.

I've got an old Steyr M1895 that shoots the old 8x56R. Now that's an ugly one. Only pre-invasion of Poland ammo is available! Recoils like an angry mule! By the way; in 8x56R, the "R" stands for "really really corrosive!!!!

Agreed on the Kifaru. From what I have heard Germany's Blaser is one of the finest rifles ever made. In my view it's also one of the ugliest. No amount of engraving helps.

I'm a big fan of leverguns. From a style standpoint nothing beats the Winchester 94, the Marlin is a close second, and the old model Browning BLR (straight stock) third. But I have always thought that the famous Winchester 73 is downright homely. The new model BLR long action wins no prizes either.

Hey m141a,
I, too, have a Steyer M1895, but in 8 x 50R. While the cartridge may (ok, it does) qualify as ugly, I've always thought the rifle was a pretty one! It's got a 30+ inch barrel and is around 42 inches overall. I finally found brass and dies, so no more hunting around for the ugly surplus ammo (the last stuff I found was Hungarian dated 1935).

Erich
By the way, I used to work on a model of teletype named the M141...there was no "a" designation.

Yes, the rifle's not hard on the eye.

My Steyr has a 18" bbl. and a cut down stock. From what I researched, the Germans took the old Austro- Hungarian beauties, cut 'em down and rechambered them, only to have them serve as last ditch "Volksturm" rifles for the old men and young-uns. Mine is like new.
