I am interested in having a basic bolt action in 30 carbine built.
It will be fairly basic.
From scratch build or a mod to an off the shelf or other available rifle would be considered.
A standard one piece walnut pistol grip stock, no checkering.
A plain under receiver type magazine preferred, but a military style removable magazine would be OK.
Receiver mounted peep sight and blade front sight.
Steel or plastic butt plate.
Plain trigger (Like old style model 70 Winchesters), adjustable for pull.
Receiver drilled to accomodate a standard scope base.
Tested and fired to verify functionality.
Anyone out there interested in helping me with this.
I would consider someone who needs a project for a gunsmithing class.

Haven't done it, but if I were to try, would look to a .22 Hornet rifle as a starting point. OL is compatible, and the diameter of the .22 Hornet rim is only 1/10th inch smaller, so the bolt face could most likely be enlarged enough to work. Would have to look over the various .22 hronet actions/magazines (passing on the Ruger Rotary mag for this mod).... CZ?

Any particular reason you wouldn't make it easy on yourself and get an Encore? I love my bolt guns, but that one would probably be quite a bit less expensive if you went with a single-shot action. I know H&R offers their rifle in .22 Hornet, so maybe you could get one of those and then have a gunsmith open up the chamber and barrel? Just a thought.

Cant think of a properly sized bolt action for the 30 Carbine. Would have to be made. Its not a bolt gun but at one time Marlin made a lever gun with a magazine for the 30 Carbine. Thats the only other 30 Carbine Rifle I can think of. Savage made some bolt rifles in 32-20 which would be close. You might be able to rebarrel a Spanish Destroyer to 7.62x25 for something similar.

Sorry...not in the biz and haven't make a .30carbine.

But if I were to, would have to take a hard look at the CZ 527. It soes come in .22hornbet (as well as a few longer rounds) and has a detachable box mag. Know that isnt on your list, but have found detachable box. mags to be easier to make feed odd shaped rounds right than Mauser type built in mags.

.22Hornet OAL is about 1.723" and the rim is about .350". .30carbine OAL is about 1.68 and the rim about .360". Seems like that length of bolt stroke would be right, and the bolt face should be able to be opened .01". getting the magazine to feed the .30carbine might take some trying.

If you were to go to a .30carbine bolt gun, might consider speeding up the barrel twist. Standard carbine ballres just don't have the twist to spin hevier/longer .30caliber bullets...but the same case in a 1:10 might make for a nice "whisper" type round.... tossing 150's to just under the speed of sound but with enough spin to make them accurate.

I think Ribbonstone is on the right track with the CZ. It is probably the best comprimise of affordable, workable, available of any likely action donar.

I've done some experimenting with converting small ring mausers to smaller rim diameter rounds and it is simply too high of a hurdle to overcome... the action is just too large to feed the round without the problems of failing to pick a round out of the magazine, failure to pick up the round with the extractor, and diving the nose of the bullet into the back of the barrel rather than the chamber.

There are some discussions happening on this site about single shot bolt actions from a homebuild perspective that may inspire some alternate ideas...http://garagegunsmithing.com/index.php?option=com_jfusion&Itemid=54&jfile=index.php

Don't know how well it would work but older Savage models like the 340 series or the Stevens 322 in 22 Hornet or even 222 Remington. They use a single stack clip and held five hornet rounds and believe four 222's. If cost isn't a factor then I would go the CZ route as its a very fine small mauser style action.

I doubt that you will be able to find any of those acitons as Rem muscled in on the importation and now offers them in their own lineup as the 798 Rem, You might hve better luck buying a complete rifle and and having it smithed to your needs.

The CZ 527

Friends have built 17 PeeWee rifles which is the 30 Carbine case necked to 17 caliber. I think they have used both .223 rifles with 22 Hornet extractors fitted, and maybe the 22 Hornet action with the bolt fact opened just a smidge. I can ask for details if you are seriously in the 'ready to build' phase.

PS. the 17 Pee Wee rifles are now their favorites. They own every 17 Wildcat that's popular for our "Montana Gopher Shootin' Trips! I'm still doing well with just the 17 Ackley Hornet and 17 Mach IV [Fireball].
If they have too much more fun with their 17 PeeWees I may have to build one, too.
