OK, boys - the Ossabaw hunt is on for Oct 7-9!!!!

The 7-08 and .308 are both tried & true out to 400yds....

Now IF things go well and I'm all bloody & happy, I'm thinking I should break out one or two old-schoolers just for entertainment. So - look at the list below & tell me which you'd like to see kill a pig! Choose gun AND caliber if several calibers are listed. Be aware that fair-chase and ethical hunt tactics will be dictated by the chosen arms, and that MOST listed are "proven" by me with my loads.

I'll post pics after the hunt & field all interesting questions.

Evans New Model Carbine .44 Evans Long
Snider MkIII Carbine .577 Snider
.43 Dutch Beaumont
1871/84 Mauser 11mm Mauser
Remington Rolling Block .43 Spanish (rifle or carbine?)
1868 Trapdoor Springfield .50-70
Martini - Enfield 577-450MH
Smith Carbine
Spencer Carbine (Repro or Original?)
1863 Sharps Conversion Carbine .50-70
Rem Rolling Block (.43 Egyptian or .44 Danish?)
1886 (.45-90 or .33 or .40-65?)
1892 (.38-40 or .32-20?)
1895 (.405 or .35Win or .30-40 or 7.62x64?)

OK - Hunt Report

1) Sow @40yds taken w/Rem 700VTR .308 150gr SST & 46gr IMR4064 behind the ear - DRT.
2) Boar @80yds quartering away as fast as he could run - not fast enough! Springfield 1868 Trapdoor .50-70 530gr Lee pure lead & 24gr(?) AA 2495 through aeorta & neck (as seen in pic) - chased 30yds w/finisher in top of skull (I was tired of running)....

A third was guestimated @300lbs - took a slug from the trapdoor @75yds on the other side of a slough & (surprise!) was knocked down squealing like, well, a pig. I eventually crossed, found 1/2pint bright red @impact sight where hog fell. Red on the marsh grass, and lots of red on a log crossed 25yds later. Nothing for 200yds to the "mother of all sloughs" where swimming was de-rigueur - I don't swim so Ms.Piggy went elsewhere to expire....

Congrats! Looks like you took two very nice hogs and likely will have a freezer full of fine eating as well. Whereabouts were you hunting in Georgia? We were in Johnson County last month and one of our group took a really nice big boar on our trip.

A great way to spend time with those great old toys!! :D:D

To All,

I'm conflicted between using my 1878 vintage Danish RB musket in 11.7x56R OR my "new to me" NYS Naval Militia musket in .50-70 Government.
(Despite my load of modern rifles, the old BP rifles keep drawing my attention/interest, when I consider big game hunting.)

yours, satx
