I shot some of my handloads from various pistols and my .454 SRH last weekend into wet phonebooks.  Here is what I observed:

300XTP 22.5 H110 @1287fps 45 Colt Starline, CCI 350 -  expanded to .58, penetrated 23"

300XTP/ MAG  32.0 H110 @ 1711fps .454 Starline, CCI SR MAG - .81" , 21" deep.  Expanded to a beautiful mushroom, but did not go very deep for a hunting round. It did core out about an 1.5" hole 18" deep, though.

335 CPB WFN  32.0 H110 @ 1688fps  .454 Starline CCI SP MAG - .456" no expansion , 48" in wetpack and through a 4" dry phonebook at the rear and it dinged itself on a cinder block that I used to prop up the books.  Unbelieveable 1.5" channel cut for 37"!!!

I forgot to add this load:

255 Hard Cast SWC 13.5 800X @ 1311fps .45 LC Starline, CCI 350 - 26" deep with no expansion. Nice .75" channel 20" long, not as dramatic, but a good load.

This speaks highly of bigger and heavier is better and speed don't necessarily matter. You can equate this to Marshall's idea of a 325gr +/- 45-70 bullet performing quite nicely as well. Good report.

MCNETT,

Thoroughly enjoyed your post, great hands-on data! I remember the first time and how amazed I was when I had to keep adding 4X4's to the test for my .44 mag hard cast. The penetration results can be very impressive.

Thanks,

Dan

WOW!  I'm not shooting a .454 so am only running bullets in the 1200fps range, but still... 4 FEET?!?!?!  Bet that it's not much less at say 1150fps or so, which is was my 340's run.  Let us know if you test any WFN's in the neighborhood of 1200fps.

One thing that surprised me was how well the Hornady XTP held up at .454 velocities.  I guess for a hollowpoint it's a pretty good bullet after all.  I might have to get ambitious and shoot a deer with one, surely it'll do for a 100 lb whitetail doe.
