.410 slugs run out of steam pretty quick. The BC is only .067 and they might start out at 1830 fps but they're down to 1060 fps at 100 yards. Combine that with a weight of 88 grains and they've got less energy at 100 yards than a .38 Special +P has.
A Federal .410 slug gave me the least penetration in wetpack of any bullet I've tried. The hole was 3" deep and 3" in diameter. A complete blow-up at 10 yards. I figured they'd be OK for skunks and racoons at close range, but anytime a varmint showed up, another gun was handy. So I don't know how they perform on critters, but they're sure not a deer load.
Use 7 1/2 shot at 20 yards and crows lose all interest in eating duck eggs.
