Hi All.

I have a Winchester 94 AE .30/30 which is about 7 years old. I bought it new back then and installed a Williams 5D sight on it. I am 56 years old so my eyesight is not what it was. Anyway the best I could do with irons was about 3 to 4 inch, 3 shot groups at 100 yards.

I decided to scope it with a Simmons Master ProSport, fixed 4x, using Weaver low rings.

I went to the range today to sight it in and proceded to test various ammo.

With Winchester Powerpoint 150 grainers I was shooting groups with the tightest 2 1/8", the largest 2 7/8". I was pleased.

Then I tried Remington 150 grain Core-Lokts. Wow! Tightest group was 7/8" and largest was 1 3/4".

Even with my .243 bolt action, I don't shoot much better than this.

I will sleep well tonight. This dog will hunt!

Beachbreak,

Welcome to ShootersForum! :) Rules are simple, be nice and join in.

Congratulations on the improvement in your groups when using a scope and switching to the 150gr Core-Lokt ammo. Sounds like you've found a combination that will definitely get the job done. Are you going to try any of the Leverevolution rounds? For most woods hunting, they don't offer much of an advantage, but if you happen to see a fat buck across a corn field, the extra range could come in handy.

Hope to see your posts around the forum!

I'm a scope guy as well- it would be nice to have the vission I had as an 18 year old, but alas time doesn't allow that! All but two of my lever guns have a scope on them. Those two are my short range, heavy timber guns! Plus they were not made to take a scope, '66 Win '94 top eject and a Rossi '92 top eject. All my other levers were drilled and tapped for scopes!

Yep, you are definitely good to go for hunting. I finally put a scope on my 94AE last year. I used Weaver low mounts with a Bushnell Trophy 1.75x4-32 and Circle-X reticle. The 150 Power Points grouped better than I ever hoped at 100 yds. I was gonna put a peep sight on it, but found the used scope for less money. The Leverevolutions were great too, but I still have a couple boxes of Power Points to use for hunting the woods around here. Although, heck I might switch this year because there are a few places where I hunt that a 200+ yard shot is possible. I've got time to figure it out. Right now I am trying to get the gobblers away from hens.....
