The rib is easy to tell if original or not. The barrel is another thing altogeather. Quite a few model 12's had had their barrels changed. The only real way is get a letter from the Cody Museum if possile. It will tell you what barrel configuration was original to the gun. The only other way isnt as reliable but can give an approximate. Check a good book on the subject to see when your 12 was made then check writing on barrel to see if it coinsides with the year of manufacture. Winchester changed the writings on the barrels periodically.
