I have a model 12/20 with a vent rib barrel. how can i tell if this barrel is original or an add?

my guess is barrel is original since model 12 does not easly accomadate barrel swaps. the rib may be added if the gun was early production gun. the 20 gauge version is somewhat collectable.

The rib is easy to tell if original or not. The barrel is another thing altogeather. Quite a few model 12's had had their barrels changed. The only real way is get a letter from the Cody Museum if possile. It will tell you what barrel configuration was original to the gun. The only other way isnt as reliable but can give an approximate. Check a good book on the subject to see when your 12 was made then check writing on barrel to see if it coinsides with the year of manufacture. Winchester changed the writings on the barrels periodically.
