I just picked up a Winchester Model 70 in 7mm-08 I was trying to date the year but am a little confused. According to what I have found online the serial number is from 1978, but I didn't think the 7mm-08 came out till after 1980? Any help on this?
Without the serial number no one could help ! The round itself was developed about 1958 and was known as the 7mm/308, but Remington made it popular and started chambering for it in 1980.
Remington commercialized the 7-08 in 1980, and I've had one ever since. Winchester waited a while to chamber same, I think the first M70's so chambered were the short action M70's.
If the stamping on the barrel is actually Winchester, it's likely not that old. If it's not Winnie stamping, it could be a re-barreled .308.
