Just acquired a Winchester model 70 30-06. Built in 1964 (serial #701103). Has Mauser style safety switch. It's my understanding that was changed in 64. Curious why this gun would not have the post 64 safety switch. Any information about this would be appreciated.

Correct. The M70 safety has remained basically the same configuration since first brought out in the late 1930's. Some improvements made to the original, but remained the same 3 function on the right side of the gas shield.

The Mauser-style safety rotated about the bolt axis. The Mod 70 safety rotates about the vertical axis...or 90 degrees off the bolt axis. The pre - and - post '64 safety did not change.

It depends

A Winchester Model 70 with a serial number below 700,000 is generally considered to be a pre-'64 rifle. Sounds like the rifle in question is a post-'64 push feed. All the best...
