I have recently found a Winchester Mod. 77. I did not buy it because the barrel was marked 22L instead of 22LR. Is this truely a 22 long or is that the way they marked barrels back when this rifle was built? Can a 22 long rifle round be safely fired in this rifle?

If you look at the markings again, you'll notice that it reads "22L. Rifle". It is made to only shoot 22LR.

Is it a tube feed or a magazine feed? If it is a magazine feed, you will be able to see that the magazine is sized for 22LR. If it is a tube fed model, look at the size of the loading gate. It will be sized for 22LR.
