Wow!! Is this an incredible round or what! :D

See, I am a longtime shooter of Remington Core-Lokt 30-30 rounds. A while back a guy at the range noticed my Marlin 30-30 and we chatted about different rounds and how I always shoot Remington Core-Lokt 170's. The guy walked back to his truck and came back with 2 rounds of Winchester Silvertip 170's. He said, "it's cool... try 'em. They're better than the Core-Lokt's." I was hesitant at first, accepting ammo from someone I don't know. But after I finished shooting the Core-Lokt's, I shot the Silvertip's and was really impressed. At 50 yards, I made the bullet holes touch in the 10 ring!

Anyway, I finally found a box of Wincester Silvertips at a sporting goods store and grabbed two boxes. I took a box with me to the range and a half empty box of Remington Core-Lokt's. After getting really good groups with the Core-Lokt's at 50 yards, I started shooting the Silvertips. I couldn't believe it... 50 yards, open sights... An old Marlin 30AS 30-30... I put three rounds in the bullseye & 10 ring and made all three bullet holes touch!!!! :D

My Marlin 30-30 will now be shooting Winchester Silvertip 170's and in the event I can't find them at the store, I'll still use Remington Core-Lokt's as a backup ammo.

Anyone else shoot a 30-30 and get great groups?

I have always hear and found that it is true, that a rifle will shoot better with a particular load over others. Change ammuntion until your rifle finds what it will shoot the best and stay with it until something new comes out and try that too. You can never tell when you find a factory load that will put most of the rounds thru or touching the same hole, at that time you have found your load. :D Next time try some Hornady, PMC, Federal or any other kind of ammo and enjoy the practice.

Wait till the 30.30 hornadys in a soft point are available and try them. You can't argue with the long range balistics but I doubt they will improve your 50 yd target shooting. sounds like those Winchesters are working for ya just fine.

I zero my 30-30 carbine for right on at 150 yards. Winchester's 150 grain SilverTip bullets typically shoot into a 4.5 inch group at this distance for me. In contrast, Remington 150 grain corelokts shoot a little tighter group of 3.25 inches.

Both loadings will topple any mule deer that ever lived with one well placed shot through the chest.

I've never quite understood what becomes of the silver (aluminum alloy) tip during mushrooming action.
