Yep, Leupold jumped into bed with the communist Chinese some time ago. Some Leupold products are being made in China. Not surprisingly, the communist Chinese knocked off other Leupold products.

Leupold does not own its trademark name in China: A Chinese company owns the Leupold trademark there.

Leupold has to know the Chinese communists have copied many of their scopes:

Lay down with dogs, expect fleas

It's old news, but when Leupold, pronounced (lou-poled), NOT (Lee-a-poled) outsourced for parts to be made in China, then waved the MADE IN USA flag & charged us top dollar, they lost my sympathy. Yes most of my scopes are Leupold, even 1 of the Chinese knockoffs of a 1,00$+ mk5 for 100$ works OK.

I've read that Leupold uses Japanese optics, never anything from China in their product.

Not so.

Most Leupold green ring binos, scopes, spotting scopes and range finders are made in China, some are made in Japan.

Leupold is less than forthcoming when it comes to divulging where their products are being made.

Leupold claims their gold ring produts are "made in the USA". i believe that "assembled in the USA from imported parts" to be a better description.

i have numerous Leupold rifle scopes and never had a problem. Then i bought a fixed power FX2 series riflescope. That scope would not zero. Neither would its replacement. No more Leupold products for me.

Every year i install scopes, mounts and rings on a few dozen rifles. Last fall i got a re-do job. A very expensive rifle scope had it's tube bent when the owner installed it in made in China Leupold rings that were badly out of alignment.

This rangefinder is made in China:

These binos are made in China:

These decent quality binos are made in Japan:

It's not a case of being "forthcoming". It's the law. If it's not made in the USA, it can't be labeled "made in the USA". I have an FX2 series scope that I just got and it's stamped on the bottom of the scope "designed, machined, assembled in USA". Nothing ambiguous about that. They make some stuff in China, however, their gold ring products are made in the USA.

If you wouldn't support Leopold then you shouldn't support Dicks either.

A lot of low end and cheap scopes are made in China, old news. High end stuff isn't. Even Vortex does it with the low end stuff. Top end is Japan. It's why I won't buy Weaver, Bushnell and several other "inexpensive" brands.

You do know that Sinclair has a simple $45 lapping tool that prevents this. I use it to verify alignment of the rings.

Talking It's not dicks fault

Who Leupold outsources to, BUT for crying out loud, what marketing genius came up with that name, it sounds like a gay bar. "Not that there is anything wrong with that". There is a DICKS restaurant/tourist shop in the Outer banks of N.C. They did OK? with food Tee shirts etc. When they started selling thongs with their name on it, things took off. Not sure where you could fit the name/read it, on a thong, but I'd be willing to give it a try.

If China goes to **** (and with the way they're polluting their air, it could happen!) the US of A will be just fine. We've got the natural resources and the national pride to recover. I know it's a global world we live in these days, but I almost wish it would happen...might wake up a lot of younger folks to what it means to BE an American.

Without getting into a drawn out political discussion. If you're not paying attention China is developing a lot of military stuff and worse, a massive EMP device. Sooner or later we will get into it with CHina since they're flexing their muscles and developing the military for blue water operations, not to mention the development of various bomb platforms like the Hyperspace platform.

They're been at work to hack the US for over a decade and in fact two colonels in the PLA wrote a book about it. Missile and nuclear technology was vastly improved thanks to Bill Clinton.

Yep, i always check the rings for alignment and lap as needed. The cheap made in China rings sold by Weaver, Leupold and others often require too much lapping and are not worth the effort: i refuse to use them.

Every time we buy Chinese made stuff we are paying for own destruction by the Red Chinese army.

Never had that problem with a Leupold. Weaver I don't touch anymore.

I remember very well back in the mid 50's how anyone would laugh at you if you bought anything that was made in Japan because we all knew it was junk. Obviously Japan got their act together and started producing some of the worlds finest cameras, lens, electronics and now you'd give a right testicle to own anything made in Japan.

Can I get a witness?

If you're talking about the Miroku Model '92 lever actions they are making...that's about how much you have to pay!

Those ain't so bad. A Uberti would cost as much. Back when I was an audio freak I would have given both of them for a Nakamichi Dragon cassette player or a Marantz receiver...all made in Japan. I couldn't afford them then but now I can and have the next best thing to the Dragon!

Same thing with Taiwan when they started making woodworking and metal working equipment. A lot of bad castings. Now, companies like Jet and Grizzly do just fine.

Blast from the past

I bought a Marantz just like that with my first job out of high school 1974-5, the string that works the radio tuner wheel broke, but a friend still uses it today.
