94 AE rear sight problem

Registered Users do not see the above ad.

Hi folks -

I searched the archives for this and didn't come up with anything, apologies if I'm asking an old question.

I'm about to buy a model 94 AE 16" in .44 magnum from a good friend. He bought it new in the early 90's, and the firearm is in great condition.

_except_. The notch that allows you to adjust the elevation of the rear sight falls out. It does not look like there are any missing parts, it's just a little notch that rides in between the barrel and the rear sight, and it fell out at the range just from recoil.

There seems to be plenty of spring tension on the thing, and I wonder if there's some sort of retention part missing.

Thoughts and tips appreciated!

- Eli

Welcome here.
The elevation ramp is installed backwards. The notched ramp should be installed in the slot in front of the rear sight, notches toward the shooter.

In all honesty the factory buckhorn sight is a terrible sight anyway. What I did to mine was remove it and replaced it with a peep sight. The difference is night vs day. You may also wish to swap out the front sight with something more useful afield, such as a fiber optic sight.

Brownell used to sell little dovetail doohickeys that fit nicely into the slot left by the rear buckhorn sight if the vacant space offends thine eye.

60 is right. The 'sight elevator' is in backwards. Any full service gunshop has a big kit of replacements if you need one.
You can put more tension on it by removing the rear sight and gently bending the leaf downwards about .020. If it breaks, that same gun shop will have peep sights and superc is right.
