444P Value

Hello everyone,

I am considering making a trade including my 444P Outfitter with the 18.5" ported barrel. It is in excellent condition but not completely original. I had a Decelerator pad professionally installed but the stock has not been cut. I have the original sights in a bag and XS ghost rings currently installed.

I looked at Gunbroker and found that last month, one went for nearly $1000!!! Was this just a case of two bidders who had to have the same gun, or are 444P's getting expensive?

Any ideas of current values would be appreciated.

Thanks

Guns are worth what someone is willing to pay. I know I have paid more than bluebook value for something I really wanted. New 1895 444's go for around $500 - $600. Not sure how much the ported models go for. Put it on Gunbroker with a reserve for the minimum you want and see how it goes.

The Marlin .444 (actually based on the 336) is no longer being produced by Marlin and they have no plans, at present, to re-start production. Because of that, prices have risen some. The .444P is a fairly rare model of the .444, only produced for a short time and with a ported barrel (which some do not like). You would get a very good response to a question on value or a listing to sell (once you have enough posts) at the Marlin Owners Forums. There are a lot of .444 fans among their 30,000+ members. In my opinion, even a NIB version of the .444P would not be worth $1,000. But, as already stated, the true value will be set, perhaps, by someone who really wanted one and also one that was not totally original. Good Luck!

Anyone making a trade, rather than selling it in the proper market (usually NOT locally) is asking for a hit in the wallet.

I would put it on the gunbroker.com auction for a week, with an opening bid of $450, and let the fun begin.

When it's over, have the winner send you a USPS Money Order (don't forget to include an extra buyer cost of $35 shipping) and a copy of the FFL they're using - so you can mail the gun to the FFL with confidence (& legality).

You should have enough to buy the gun you were going to trade for, outright, and have plenty of $$$ leftover.

When looking on completed auctions don't focus on the high price, also consider the low. Within the search period on completed auctions a new "P" sold for $460! I just sold mine and after doing some research went outside GB for a private sale at $650 plus shipping. I had seen plenty across the web for slightly more that had been sitting for months. I sold it pronto with no fees.

I wouldn't sell/trade mine for any price. It's my favorite pack around rifle and my go-to for anything I hunt. Yeah, I've used a lot of other rifles, but my 444P is my hands downs favorite. I've polished the action and given the inside of the cartridge feed slot in the receiver a slight bevel to be able to feed cases in without scratching them. I bought it several years ago for $500 in excellent condition. It had been modified by switching the straight grip stock & lever for the pistol grip version ala 444S. I like that feature because it helps me keep it tucked in tight when shooting.
